Connecticut has specific recycling fees, most notably a visible $16 fee on all new mattresses/box springs as of 2025, funding the state's mattress recycling program. Local recycling centers may charge other fees for specific items like appliances, brush, or demolition debris, often varying by town (e.g., Woodbridge charges $10 for refrigerant appliances, New Milford charges businesses for recyclables). General household recycling is often covered by local taxes or disposal fees, but some transfer stations have tonnage or per-item charges for bulkier waste.

In 2020, only about 17% of our waste was shipped out of state.
