Due to its composition and low density nature, Styrofoam is very difficult to recycle, and usually must be disposed of in the trash. Styrofoam products CANNOT be recycled in your single-stream recycling bins and are considered trash. Styrofoam is not recyclable in Hawaii or at USAG Hawaii installations.

Hawaii manages trash primarily through waste-to-energy (H-POWER) for general waste on Oahu, extensive recycling of paper, plastics, glass, and metals, and landfilling residuals, with efforts to divert green waste and e-waste, though some waste, especially hazardous materials, may still be shipped to the mainland as islands face landfill capacity issues. Different islands have varying systems, but the goal is waste reduction, energy generation, and resource recovery.

O'ahu's automated curbside green waste collection program serves more than 160,000 households. Residents with green carts should prepare their trees by removing all decorations, cutting the tree into pieces to fit completely inside the cart, and ensuring the lid closes.
