Regarding types of vehicles allowed to be driven into Vietnam, under Decree 151, foreign-plated vehicles permitted for participation in traffic in Vietnam include passenger cars of up to eight seats (excluding the driver's), both left-hand drive and right-hand drive, motorhomes and two-wheeled motorcycles.

Vietnam car import taxes are complex, involving high Import Duties ( up to 70% from non-FTA nations), a 10% VAT, and a steep Special Consumption Tax (SCT) that can exceed 100% for luxury vehicles, plus registration fees, making imported cars very expensive, though Free Trade Agreements (FTAs like ASEAN/EVFTA) offer reduced duties for specific regions and vehicles (especially EVs/green tech).

Vietnam is still imposing high taxes and fees in the country's automotive market despite of strong growth in the passenger vehicle market. The policy aims to protect the local passenger vehicle industry as well as to reduce pollution and congestion problems.
